THE CONTENT OF AER
T
he AER platform makes standardi-
sed pre-existing State Archive data-
bases available over the Internet and links
archival descriptions to a digital image
of the document. AER provides instant,
free access to over 14 million images of
documents and descriptions from
anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.
To achieve this, the project developed a
methodology and digitisation plan struc-
tured around specific criteria:
1 Described and organised
documentation:
To digitise material that had already
been described and was in an organi-
sed form, and to establish links
between the text databases and the
images.
members of the public so that they
can better defend their rights;
4 to disseminate its high-quality cultural
content over the Internet in the
Spanish language;
5 to better preserve and disseminate the
content of the Archives through
digitisation.
A
ER is giving enormous visibility to
the documentary heritage housed in
Spanish Archives over the Internet. Of
the various `memory' institutions, archi-
ves are perhaps the least well represented
on the Internet and the least likely to
make use of the new possibilities offered
by Internet technology. Archives must
accept new challenges, play a more active
role in the dissemination of information,
and respond to ever more demanding
and qualified user demands.
T
he AER Project (Proyecto de
Archivos Españoles en Red, Spanish
Archives on the Net,
http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/index_aer.jsp) is a
worldwide pioneering project whose fun-
damental purpose is to make the content
of Spanish Archives available over the
Internet, incorporating both descriptions
and digitised images of documents kept in
the main Spanish Archives.
OBJECTIVES
T
he AER project was developed by
the Spanish State Archives Bureau of
the Ministry of Education, Culture and
Sport in response to the need to tackle
the challenges to archives presented by
new information technologies.
T
he objectives of the AER project are
very clear:
1 to provide instant free access to the
Spanish Archives for the international
research community and members of
the general public;
2 to facilitate and promote research
work;
3 to bring the Archives closer to
